Capacity Building and Training

The Cyprus Empowered Surveillance Mechanism (CY-ESM) project places a strong emphasis on capacity building and training as pivotal components for enhancing Cyprus’s public health surveillance capabilities. Through comprehensive training modules and capacity-building initiatives, the project aims to develop a robust workforce equipped to handle advanced surveillance tasks and respond effectively to public health emergencies.

Key Focus Areas of Capacity Building and Training:

  1. Expert Development: The CY-ESM project is dedicated to forming a critical mass of public health experts, including epidemiologists, data analysts, and communication specialists. This team will be pivotal in managing and analyzing surveillance data, enhancing the nation’s ability to forecast and respond to health threats.
  2. Training Programs: A wide range of training programs will be implemented to ensure that all levels of health staff are well-versed in modern surveillance techniques. These programs will cover areas such as data collection, analysis, and the interpretation of health data for decision-making. Training will also extend to emergency response protocols, ensuring readiness and effective action during health crises.
  3. Technical Skills Enhancement: Specialized training sessions will focus on the use of digital tools and platforms integral to the new fully digitalized surveillance system. These sessions will equip staff with the necessary skills to operate advanced software and analytics tools that facilitate real-time monitoring and reporting.
  4. Intersectoral Collaboration: Emphasizing the One Health approach, training will also foster collaboration across different sectors, including human health, animal health, and environmental science. This will ensure a well-rounded surveillance strategy that can efficiently handle complex health threats that span multiple domains.
  5. Public Awareness and Engagement: The project will also include initiatives to raise public awareness about the importance of surveillance and the specific roles of different community members in supporting public health measures. These efforts will aim to enhance community engagement and cooperation during public health interventions.
